“Moon bird” is a term that refers to a bird that has migrated a distance greater than the earth to the moon in its lifetime. For example, many older Red Knots are moon birds, with one of the longest migratory trips of any bird — 9,300 miles along the Atlantic flyway from its wintering grounds in southern South America to its high Arctic breeding grounds.
